Scripps Institution of Oceanography Advisory Council
Definition and Purpose
Scripps Institution of Oceanography Advisory Council
is a high-level group of nationally and internationally prominent
individuals who provide advice, assistance, and support to Scripps and
its director. Members are executives of major corporations, leaders of
national organizations, and prominent philanthropists. Council members
play a critical role in support of the institution, using their
experience, connections, influence, and wealth on behalf of the
institution to do things for us that we would have difficulty doing
ourselves. They recruit others, promote the interests of Scripps with
other organizations and people around the world, give to institution
priorities, and provide access to people we might not otherwise be able
to contact.
Activities
The Council meets
formally once per year to review the institution's progress and to
advise the director in strategic planning for priorities, new
directions, and high level outreach. Throughout the year, the director
is in periodic contact with members through visits, phone calls, and
correspondence to keep them informed of major developments and issues
at Scripps and to seek their guidance and support. Council members also
provide feedback, as necessary, on drafts of important public documents
such as white papers, case statements, and position papers.
