New Vice Chancellor will lead Scripps Institution of Oceanography as Director and as Dean of Marine Sciences

Dr. Haymet is a highly distinguished researcher who comes to UC San Diego from his position as the Science and Policy Director and former Chief of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO), Australia's national science agency. CSIRO is one of the largest and most diverse research agencies in the world. Dr. Haymet, who will be a tenured professor of oceanography at Scripps, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago and a Doctor of Science from the University of Sydney.

"Tony's experience as an interdisciplinary leader, scholar, author and researcher will be invaluable for UC San Diego to grow our work in marine sciences," said Chancellor Marye Anne Fox. Fox continued, "His international stature, reflected in his professional and scholarly affiliations and awards, will serve UC San Diego and Scripps in moving forward with Scripps' strategic plan and establishing global partnerships."

"It is an honor to be appointed director of Scripps Oceanography and to have the opportunity to work with the broader UCSD community to maintain Scripps as a world-leading ocean, atmosphere and earth science research institution," Dr. Haymet said. "The next few years will be crucial in determining how our planet responds to the challenges it faces, such as global warming. Scripps will continue its mission of training the scientists of tomorrow and 'getting the science right' so that policy makers and citizens know the magnitude of the problems we face, and some options for conquering them."

Between 1981 and 1991, Dr. Haymet completed postdoctoral work at Harvard University and taught at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of Utah. In 1998, he became a Distinguished University Professor of Chemistry at the University of Houston. Dr. Haymet has published more than 160 peer-reviewed scientific articles. In 2003, Dr. Haymet was appointed Chief of CSIRO Marine Research, and in July 2005, became Chief of the newly merged CSIRO Marine and Atmospheric Research, with a research portfolio spanning climate change, oceanography, fisheries, marine ecosystem sustainability, aquaculture and urban air quality. He also founded the "Wealth from Oceans" Flagship, one of six outcome-driven and industrially-focused research portfolios set by Australia's national priorities. While teaching at the University of Sydney in the mid-1990s, Dr. Haymet worked in Antarctica with former Scripps researcher Professor Art DeVries (University of Illinois).

Dr. Haymet's professional associations include his election as incoming chair of the Partnership for Observation of the Global Oceans (POGO); and in Australia as a member of the Board of Directors of the Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) for Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems (ACE); founding partner of the newly formed Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI); chair of the Australian Federal Government's Oceans Policy Science Advisory Group and member of the National Ocean Advisory Group and the Marine and Coastal Committee.

Dr. Haymet's base salary is $250,000; he will also receive a temporary relocation allowance of $62,500, reimbursement for up to 3 trips to locate permanent housing and up to 2 trips to manage the relocation from Australia, 30 days of temporary housing, reimbursement for moving expenses, eligibility for a University-sponsored home loan of up to $1,000,000, and the standard Senior Management Group benefits package which includes medical, disability and life insurance coverage, as well as participation in the UC retirement and savings programs.

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, at the University of California, San Diego, is one of the oldest, largest, and most important centers for global science research and graduate training in the world.
