Scientists Rank Scripps a “Best Place to Work”

Of the west coast institutions listed, Scripps Oceanography was ranked number seven.

Survey respondents, all of whom were life scientists with a permanent position in an academic, hospital, government, or research organization, recognized Scripps for its strengths in the categories of “Tenure and Promotion” and “Management and Policies” in particular.

For Scripps to achieve high marks in these categories a majority of survey-takers responded positively to statements such as “my institution has effective and supportive leadership that responds to input from researchers;” “institution administrators are accessible and listen to faculty and staff members;” and “the tenure or promotion systems are fairly applied.”

Scripps shared company with fellow University of California institutions UC San Francisco and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which also made the list. Private institutions that were similarly honored included Princeton, Stanford, and Yale.

This is not the first recognition Scripps has received in recent years for its desirable working atmosphere.The Scientist magazine’s 2007 listing of “Best Places to Work: Postdocs” ranked Scripps number four among west coast institutions.

NOTE: The results of these annual surveys should be assessed noting large variations from year to year based on fluctuating numbers of self-selecting survey participants.
