Diversity at Scripps OceanographyWelcome to Scripps Institution of Oceanography's diversity website. You will find news about our efforts to achieve and maintain diversity at Scripps, as well as information about the work of the many Scripps scientists, students, and staff committed to advancing the interests of a diverse Scripps community. Welcome from Director Haymet
For more than 100 years, Scripps Institution of Oceanography scientists and students have explored the oceans and Earth seeking the dynamic diversity found on our planet. Our mission to seek, teach, and communicate scientific understanding of the oceans, atmosphere, and Earth for the benefit of society and the environment begins with our most precious resource: our people. Diversity of all kinds is fundamental at Scripps. Drawing inspiration from the sea and the diversity of life in the ocean and on Earth that we helped discover and are helping to preserve, we can look at Scripps as a research and teaching institution and appreciate the increasing diversity of our students, our faculty, and our staff. Scripps strives for diversity among its student population and has made a rapid transition to a 50-50 ratio of male and female students. We use that standard as our model to become equally diverse in others areas. I encourage you to become involved with the diversity activities at Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Share your energy and knowledge and help ensure a welcoming environment for everyone. —Tony Haymet New partnership with Howard University expands research opportunities for undergraduatesScripps is excited to welcome Howard University undergraduate students interested in exploring scientific questions and gaining hands-on laboratory and field research experience, through mentored research internships (8 weeks during the summer), starting in 2013. Check out the Pathways program and other opportunities for undergraduates to work under the guidance of faculty mentors on a wide range of projects on the leading edge of scientific discovery.
