Grupe, Benjamin

Graduate Student

Degrees:

  • B.A., Gettysburg College
  • M.S., Oregon Institute of Marine Biology, University of Oregon

Research Interests:

  • Community assembly, successional dynamics, and food web structure on hard substrates at deep-sea chemosynthetic habitatsin the East Pacific: cold methane seeps on the Costa Rican and Oregon continental margins; Juan de Fuca hydrothermal vents.
  • How do different types of heterogeneity (geochemical, substrate, spatial), which are manifested in different scales of habitat patches, influence metacommunity dynamics at methane seeps and hydrothermal vents?
  • Marine community ecology
  • Deep-sea ecology
  • Larval dispersal and connectivity between patchy habitats
  • Rocky intertidal ecology and sea urchins
  • Anthropogenic effects (including global climate change) on marine communities and ecosystems

Honors and Awards:

  • Tegner Fellowship for research in coastal ecology, 2010.
  • National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowship, 2008-2011.
  • Best Student Paper, Honorable Mention for Ecology and Conservation (Mia Tegner Award), Western Society of Naturalists Annual Meeting, 2006.

Mentoring:

  • Thompson, Milinda (Undergrad; 2011-2011)
