  • Methane seeps (study sites: Costa Rica, Oregon, San Diego); Hydrothermal vents (study site: Juan de Fuca Main Endeavour)
  • Maintenance and structure of biodiversity within seep and vent metacommunities
  • Community structure and ecological resilience in deep-sea environments
  • Food web ecology and stable isotopes
  • Marine community ecology
  • Larval dispersal and connectivity between patchy habitats
  • Rocky intertidal ecology and sea urchins
  • Anthropogenic effects on marine communities and ecosystems, especially relating to deep-sea conservation
