Center for Environment and National Security
In October 2009 Reno Harnish became the founding Director of the Center for Environment and National Security. Prior to joining Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, Reno served as Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Oceans, Environment and Science at the Department of State in Washington D.C. He was the US Government Chairman for the Washington International Renewable Energy Conference (WIREC), a Ministerial conference with more than 120 countries, four US Cabinet Members and a major address by the President. Reno was the lead negotiator on an agreed international definition of sustainable bio fuel production and signed, on behalf of the United States, entry into the International Renewable Energy Agency. From 2003-2006 he served as US Ambassador in Azerbaijan where he helped resolve financial problems of the Southern Gas Pipeline and participated in the opening of the Baku Tbilisi Ceyan (BTC) Oil pipeline. From 2002-2003 he served as Chief of Mission in Kosovo focusing on peace-making, reduction of ethnic conflict and return of refugees. Reno was the Deputy Chief of Mission (chief operating officer) in Cairo, Egypt from 1999-2002 where he oversaw operations of a $2 billion, 2400 employee Embassy, and the largest in the world at the time.
Reno took a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science at San Diego State
University and two Masters Degrees one in International Service and a
second in Economics at the American University in Washington D.C. He has
been decorated many times, including a Distinguished Honor Award from
the Department of State and a Meritorious Service award from the
President. Reno speaks and reads German, Italian and Swedish. He lives
with his wife Leslie in Point Loma, California. They have two adult
children and a grandchild.
