Kohei Kazahaya:Crustal Fluid Team LeaderGeological Survey of Japan, AIST
I have been working at Geological Survey of Japan as volcanologist focusing mainly on the role of volcanic volatiles for magmatic processes. One of my studies is based on monitoring SO2 flux using COSPEC and newly developed DOAS instruments at active Japanese volcanoes to evaluate current magmatic activities and to determine volatile budget during eruptive and passive degassing periods. Chemical and isotopic compositions of volcanic gases, volatile content of magmas and volatile fluxes are fluid dynamically combined with magmatic parameters such as solubility, density and viscosity to know magma degassing processes quantitatively. I also have a responsibility to lead the Crustal Fluid Team formed in Geological Survey of Japan on the purpose to assess long-term groundwater stability and effect of magmatic activity for the safety disposal of nuclear waste. The studies on groundwater and thermal waters related to volcanic activity are going to be performed using multi-isotope technique including noble gases, water, carbon-bearing species, sulfur-bearing species to estimate groundwater mixing processes and mean retention time during a whole disposal period of 100,000 years. |
