The S2S-PNG Program will investigate the dispersal of sediment in the ocean today and
in the past using a "nested approach" as shown below. Process observations of sediment
transport will be made with instrumented tripods and moorings (see equipment pages).
Coring over a range of depth scales will enable the sampling of sedimentary strata just
recently deposited and emplaced millennia ago. Repeated coring such at sites where process
observations are being made and at anchor stations will allow an understanding of the processes
responsible for depositing individual sediment layers. Finally, geophysical data such as 3.5 kHz
and Chirp seismic-reflection profiles will place individual core sites in a spatial context and
will give a longer term perspective on the development of sediment strata..
