Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and the family of
the late legendary statesman of science Roger Revelle honored
Revelle's 100th birthday with a three-day celebration, March 5-7, 2009.
The events recognized the UC San Diego founder and former Scripps
Director's lifetime achievements and awarded Al Gore with the inaugural
Roger Revelle Prize.
Revelle was a world-renowned scientist and is considered one of
the true pioneers of climate change research.

Reminiscences and reception commemorating Revelle's life and achievements.

Roger Revelle Centennial Symposium (8 a.m.-4 p.m.)
World-renowned scientists and policymakers discussed the interrelationships of climate change, ocean and environmental health, national security, energy independence, and the critical role science and technology can play in meeting today's global challenges.

Roger Revelle Prize Reception and Dinner with Al Gore (6 p.m.)
The family of Roger Revelle and Scripps/UC San Diego awarded the inaugural Roger Revelle Prize to former Vice President Al Gore for his outstanding contribution in bringing the science and issues raised by environmental and climate change research to a worldwide audience. (Reserved for friends and contributors to Scripps whose generous support underwrote this three-day series of events. All remaining proceeds went toward establishing the Roger Revelle Leadership Fund at Scripps.)
