Cruise Plans/Prospectus
R/V Sproul, 17 and 21 April 1995
Chief Scientists: Robert A. Sohn (17 April), Wayne C. Crawford (21 April)
These cruises are planned as part of a series of deployments and recoveries
of two autonomous seafloor gravimeters off of La Jolla (centered at
32d52mN, 117d23mW) and Oceanside/Camp Pendleton (centered at 33d14mN,
117d33mW). The instruments weigh 400-600 lbs. each and will be deployed
and recovered using the Sproul crane. In addition to the gravimeters, we
will be bringing onboard 4--5 Zarges boxes containing a Macintosh computer,
an acoustic telemetry unit, a deep-sea battery charger, and various tools.
We require a release hook and two recovery poles for deployment and
recovery of the instruments. We would like to check out from the Resident
Technicians Group two each deep-ocean radios and strobes for the experiment
duration of 17 April to 22 May.
The April 17 cruise will be deployments only. Each deployment should take one
hour, and the transit time to the La Jolla site is approximately 2-1/2
hours each way. The ship will depart the pier at 8 AM and should return by
5PM.
The April 21 cruise will include recoveries and redeployments. The
transit time to La Jolla is 2-1/2 hours, the recoveries will take a maximum
of 2 hours, there will be a battery charging interval of 5 hours during
wihich the ship will transit to Oceanside, the deployments will take a
maximum of two hours, and the transit home will take up to 5 hours. The
ship will depart the pier at 8 AM and should return by 11PM. We may
arrange with another Scripps group to conduct experiments during the 5 hour
battery charging time. If we do so, the additional experiments will
require no extra support equipment.
We plan on recovering and redeploying the instruments every 3-4 days. The
next two recovery/redeployments will be on April 24-26 and April 30, in
conjunction with other Sproul experiments. Wayne Crawford or another
scientist will be a guest on these two Sproul cruises. We are arranging
other ship time for recoveries and redeployments through 22 May.
