Si,
Received your e-mail to ship scheduling regarding your
may voyage on the Sproul. I have a couple of comments.

1. The afternoon rising tide is the only time Sproul
can cross the bar. I have been ordered by Captain
Althouse to not cross the bar at night and to only
run on the river at night as a last resort. I especially
think this is wise since we havenUt been there in a
few years, the river has changed, and memories
do fade.

Thus I expect us to arrive on Sat. the 6th, in the
afternoon as I mentioned in December. If the weather
is really good there is a faint chance of arriving late
Friday afternoon.

I am worried about the 1800 scheduled departure
from COE dock. That would put us at Port Westward
(running against the Ebb) about 2230. I really do not
want to run and dock in the dark the first day on the
river. Also I really doubt that we can get the ship turned
around and back in the river that afternoon.

Due to the length of the first leg, we would like to
provision the ship upon arrival at Astoria

Another issue is that the ADCP needs to be mounted
that afternoon at the COE dock. Also we will need to be
extremely careful docking (starboard side to ) at the Port
Westward dock to ensure that we do not damage the
ADCP andare able to keep our stern out into the river.

2. Three point mooring system is very difficult to do in a
fast current environment. A two point system is better,
but still has grave challenges. I am afraid that with a
flood of up to 3.5 knots, we may have trouble holding
the stern of Sproul with its square profile and large
rudders, against the tide. At any rate the current striking the
stern may flood your working space. Also it will be difficult
to deploy anything from the a-frame without the package
being trapped underneath the stern. The gear to handle mooring
operations would take up considerable deck space.

Let me know what it is you are trying to do, and we will try to
come up with some answers. At this time we do not feel good about
a 3 point moor in the North Channel, especially that close to the
bridge.

3. No problem having people stay over the night of the 26th. We
plan to leave at 0800 to catch the rising tide over the bar.

Look forward to seeing you soon .
                                 Louie
PS As you know the ebb tide is not the time to time to cross the
bar. That is why we cannot come in Saturday morning. I'm sorry
if I wasn't clear earlier.

               offload, deinstall, etc.
               party
May 27 Sproul departs COE dock for LaJolla

In addition, we need to resolve several items:

1. Can we devise a three-point anchor system for the North Channel
station to avoid swinging on the tide changes?
2. Will people be able to sleep over on the night of the 26th or will
the Sproul leave unreasonably early?

That's all for the momento.

Thanks for looking into this for me.  My fax is 206-543-0489;
a hard copy via mail might also be useful, if the FAX is a little
fuzzy (as they often are). I'm at Geophysics Program AK-50,

Please also indicate the position of the waterline on the drawing.

Thanks very much again for your help,

David Jay

Hi,

I recieved a phone call from Si Simenstead asking for a cross
section drawings of Sproul. It was my understanding the drawings
were needed for the hole pattern for a doppler you will be installing.

I've turned this over to the machine shop at Marfac, Joe is currently
working on the drawing. I'd like to fax it you as soon as I receive it.
Could you please give me a number where I can fax you?

Thanks,

Bob/Rose,
Yes, indeed, the rumor is true; we have been informed by NSF-DEB that the
Columbia River LMER grant will be continuing, with considerable UNOLS
ship time requests in 1995-1999! And, as in 1990-1992, these are joint
CRETM-LMER cruises, with the larger vessel (Sproul) being responsible for
most of the geochemistry, productivity, microbiology, consumer ecology, etc.
investigations and the smaller, roving (Barnes) vessel the physics
(principally ADCP) investigations.

In checking on your question, there are two things to note:
(1) the UNOLS Ship Request forms had typos on the second two pages for
the R/V Sproul requests, where R/V Sproul should have been substituted
for the R/V Barnes; we started out typing the Barnes request forms and
didn't replace the later two pages for the Sproul requests; and,
(2) there IS a difference in the requests because the physics portion of
the joint cruises will have some front-/back-end work to do that won't
overlap with the Sproul. However, the overlap timing will be quite
important because both ships need to "capture" particular tide series.

The following is the actual request days and dates as we formulated it
for the proposal:

Year Ship Days(Science) Preferred Dates Alternate Dates
1995 R/V Sproul 21 5/1-5/30 5/1-6/15
        R/V Barnes 30 5/1-5/30 5/1-6/15
1996 R/V Sproul 30 7/1-7/30 7/1-8/31
        R/V Barnes 30 7/1-7/30 7/1-8/31
1997 R/V Sproul 15 2/1-2/16 2/1-3/31
        R/V Barnes 15 2/1-1/16 2/1-3/31
        R/V Sproul 15 7/1-7/30 7/1-8/31
        R/V Barnes 30 7/1-7/30 7/1-8/31
        R/V Sproul 15 9/15-9/30 9/15-10/30
        R/V Barnes 15 9/15-9/30 9/15-10/30
1998 R/V Sproul 15 1/5-1/20 1/5-2/28
        R/V Barnes 15 1/5-1/20 1/5-1/28
        R/V Sproul 15 5/1-5/30 5/1-6/15
        R/V Barnes 30 5/1-5/30 5/1-6/15
1999 R/V Sproul 21 7/1-7/30 7/1-8/31
        R/V Barnes 30 7/1-7/30 7/1-8/31

During these time windows, the Sproul time would usually be in the middle
of the time window for the Barnes, e.g., the Barnes would start one week
before and end one week after a 30-day/15-day cruise period for the
Barnes and Sproul, respectively. The preferred/requested time windows
indicate in all cases that we do not want to start earlier than the first
date, but could usually slip into the later dates. If at all feasible,
we would like to firm up scheduling of the first several years according
to the tide sequences, for which David Jay (see e-mail address
above) should be able to provide you firm (predicted) dates upon request.

Please let us know what your timing is for scheduling all years'
cruises, but certainly the 1995, of course. We will both (Simenstad and
Jay) come down to talk specifics about the Barnes scheduling at your
first opportunity, Bob. And, Rose, you can give me a call/e-mail message
at any time; I'll be around most of this month, except for ~21-29th.
