Cruise Plan, Vetter, R. G. Sproul, July 12-13
The main purpose of this cruise will be to take sediment samples using a Soutar Box Corer off the Del Mar coast. Sediments will be analyzed for macrofaunal invertebrates and carbon and nitrogen content. Data gathered in this cruise will be used in a study on biological processes within submarine canyons. Samples from the La Jolla Canyon will be collected during two cruises in August 1995 (with submersibles and a ROV).
We will leave port on 12 July, at 0800. Transit time to the first station should be about 90 minutes.
Box-coring will be conducted until sunset on 12 July, after which Scott Rumsey will take over science operations. His goal will be to locate temperature fronts and when found, he will take zooplankton samples (using simple nets) on both sides of the front. We will cease coring on 13 July no later than 1800 and return to port. If the minimum number of samples are obtained by 1600, we will return to port at that time. When the ship ties up Vetter's science party will disembark and the Ohman/Brinton party will join the Rumsey party onboard the R. G. Sproul. Those two groups will remain at sea until 0800 15 July (using the balance of Vetter's time and Ohman's NSF time).
A Niskin (Brian) bottle will be mounted on the Soutar corer to obtain water samples for oxygen analysis. If we have difficulty obtaining samples with the Soutar corer we will switch to the Ocean Instruments spade corer.
The Sproul would be used to take 2 - 3 cores at 300, 500, 700, and 900 meters along 33¡ 57' N (Southern Del Mar). The ship will operate during the daytime along this line, within 40 kilometers of shore. After sunset on 12 July the ship will operate within 50 km from shore between approximately 32¡45' N and 33¡ 10' N. Operational area on the evening of 13 July will be specified in the Ohman/Brinton cruise plan.
