Dear Rose, etc.

Here is a tentative cruise plan, although there are a few things pending,
as you will note. One other question: can you please ask the Captain if
we can stay aboard the Sproul the night of February 20 (we did this last
time)? I understand no meals would be provided. And, I promise we will
behave (i.e., not make any messes, etc)! FYI, I will not be in my ofice from
January 23 until Feb 1. I plan to send the cruise participant list on Feb
2. Hopefully by then Wayne Pawelek will have gotten back to me about the
diving.

The following is a tentative plan for Bernhard's Robert Gordon Sproul
cruise from February 21 through 25:

2/21/96, 0800 hrs: Depart MarFac, steam to Santa Barbara Basin.

2/22/96, 0600 hrs: Box core Site I (34o13.0'N, 120o02.0'W; approximate
water depth 594 m). As the scientific party processes samples, the ship
can start to slowly steam toward next site at ~0900 hrs.

2/22/96, 1100 hrs: Box core Site II (34o13.5'N, 120o02.0'W; approximate
water depth 613 m). As the scientific party processes samples, the ship
can start to slowly steam toward next site at ~1400 hrs.

2/22/96, 1600 hrs: Box core Site III (34o19.0'N, 120o02.0'W; approximate
water depth 552 m).

2/23/96, 0800 hrs: At Site IV (34o24.10'N, 119o52.2.0'W, coordinates
tentative, pending confirmation; approximate water depth 18 m), SCUBA dive
(at the present time, diving plans are tentative, but probably participants
will be the ResTech [Bob Wilson], SIO Dive Locker Technician [name?], with
assistance from SIO Dive Officer [Wayne Pawelek]). Diver's will be asked to
collect sediment cores containing bacterial mats occurring in the area of
an active hydrocarbon seep.

2/23/96, 1100 hrs: Second dive located a few hundred meters down shore
from Site IV (Site V; to serve as a non-hydrocarbon vent control site).

2/23/96, 1530 hrs: Box core at Site VI (34o17.25'N, 120o02.0'W;
approximate water depth 578 m).

2/24/96, 0630 hrs: Box core at Site VII (34o15.5'N, 120o02.0'W;
approximate water depth 585 m). Ship can start steaming toward port at
1000 hrs.

2/25/96, 0800 hrs: Return to MarFac, offload, and clean ship.

Of course, this schedule relies on ideal weather conditions, and is apt to
change at the drop of a hat (or the drop of a box core...).
