Subject: Sproul cruise
To: Parties concerned with Mooring Deployment in Saanich Inlet
(restech mailbox: pass to Bob Wilson and Tami Koonce)
From: Dr. Mark Ohman, Chief Scientist
After a phone conversation with Bob Wilson aboard the Revelle just now
(15:00, 15 July) I want to clarify the following:
1. The Ohman-Jaffe gear will be shipped to Astoria inside a van on a truck.
The truck loads at MARFAC at 09:30 on 2 Aug. It will arrive Pier 2 in
Astoria no later than 09:00 on 5 August.
2. All of the Ohman-Jaffe party will board the Sproul in Astoria at 08:00
on 5 Aug., except the Ch. Sci. I will board the Sproul when it arrives at
the IOS dock, Pat Bay, at 07:00 on 7 Aug. I will have a liquid nitrogen
tank delivered to the IOS dock, to fill 2 Dewars aboard ship that morning
before we sail.
3. We will deploy the mooring on 8 August. On 7 August we will make an
oxygen-CTD section to select the mooring site for the next day. Wilson will
be at the IOS dock in Pat Bay at 07:30 on 8 August, to be picked up by a
whaler. The mooring will be deployed and Wilson will be returned to the IOS
dock that afternoon.
4. Wilson will be at the IOS dock on 13 Aug. (time to be arranged), to be
picked up by a whaler to assist with mooring recovery. Although the Sproul
will have a full party of 13, he will stay on board that night.
5. All of the Ohman-Jaffe party will get off the Sproul at the IOS dock on
14 Aug.
6. All of the Ohman-Jaffe science gear will remain aboard the Sproul to
Eureka and probably to San Diego. LeRoy Dorman expects that there will be
sufficient deck space aboard the Sproul to keep our gear (including anchor
and MOCNESS frame) on the ship until it returns to San Diego. HOWEVER, if
Dr. Dorman requires additional deck space when he loads in Eureka, he
reserves the right to have our mooring equipment removed from the ship. In
this case, Bob Wilson will be responsible for arranging shipping of the
mooring gear to San Diego.
I will be in Europe from 24 July until I meet the Sproul on 7 August.
Please let me know soon if there are any questions. From 24 July onwards
please contact Jules Jaffe. Thanks to all.
