In the meantime, Assuming 6 survey days, and
that Melville would steam at 12 knots and that we would have minimal
overlap, we calculate we could map most of the area between 500 m and
     4000m in a north-south strip between 38.4 degrees S and 42.8 degrees
     S. As ever, one wants more, and we would like an extra day if at all
possible to ensure we cover all our key target areas. I assume the
transit-time from Hobart to Melbourne would be at your cost

The aim of the cruise would be five-fold: to define fault patterns
related to breakup on this starved margin, to map canyons and
seamounts for fisheries purposes, to define dredge sites for
geological sampling, to provide information as to where best to locate
future seismic lines, and to produce a general map for management of
our offshore economic zone. We are moving toward a major program of
this type, and this would be a valuable pilot study.

We would intend to put 2-3 people aboard in Hobart, and would like the
processing of both bathymetry and imagery to be carried out at
Scripps. I assume that both gravity and magnetics could be recorded on
the survey, and wonder whether there is any chance of deploying a
     small seismic system.

We believe some exciting scientific results will come out of the
survey, especially as regards the breakup of Gondwana, and would
welcome scientific cooperation from any interested Scripps scientists.
