Leaders - C. Nittrouer (chief scientist) C. Alexander (cruise leader, 23-29 July) Personnel - Approximately 30 scientists, technicians, and students (not including ship techs) from a range of institutions. The personnel list has the exact distribution of participants -- 35 for 18-23 Jul, 26 for 23-28 Jul, and 7 for 28-29 Jul. Dock Location - Humboldt Bay Forest Products in Fields Landing, CA (south end of Humboldt Bay) Shipboard Gear Required ship's crane - for loading/offloading gear A-frame and winch - for coring fantail capstan (forward deck) - for piston coring work boat - for surface buoy recovery portable power washer - for cleaning buoys SeaBeam - for one day of use darkroom - for developing x-radiographs Our Specialized Gear Track Point II - will require transducer to be emplaced in well box, kasten and piston corers - each will be used through aft A-frame multitrack sensor - this includes a contained gamma-ray source (H. Lee has initiated clearance requests) x-radiography - this is a small, safe system regularly used on UNOLS vessels. Darkroom facilities will be needed for developing radiographs. deck winch - for mooring recovery/deployment CTD system - for approximately 20 casts. We'll need access to a conducting wire. Detailed Itinerary 17 July - Our gear will be on the dock and ready to load by 1600. We'll spend the evening setting up gear. We hope to sleep onboard. 18 July - We would like to depart early, and start work immediately. 18-23 July - Approximately 6 hours each day will be spent box coring at two sites (60 m deep) and along a line connecting the sites. The other hours will be spent piston coring between 60-150 m. On one day, approximately 5 hours will be spent recovering an instrumented mooring and two guard buoys. After they are refurbished, they will be redeployed on another day. 23 July - About mid-day, we would like to return to Fields Landing and exchange some personnel, and immediately return to the study area. 23-28 July - Approximately 6 hours each day will be spent box coring on the shelf (60 m deep). The other 18 hours will be spent box and piston coring on the slope (150-500 m deep). 28 July - At first light, we would like to return to Fields Landing to offload most gear and personnel. From past experience, this should be completed within 5-6 hours. This would be a good time to fuel the ship. We will then return to the study area. 28-29 July - During this period, the SeaBeam system will be used for 24 hours. 29 July - We will return to Fields Landing, and remaining scientists will get off the ship. Negligible gear will be left for offloading.
