Preliminary cruise plan for OASIS 2 in Saanich Inlet:

We will conduct a series of alternating OASIS (optical-acoustic
submersible imaging system) and MOCNESS profiles to assess the small-scale
spatial dispersion of zooplankton in relation to oxygen gradients in Saanich
Inlet. OASIS profiles will be made while the Sproul is tied up to a mooring
in ca. 225 m. of water. MOCNESS profiles will be made underway, spaced
closely in time and space with OASIS profiles. Additional work will assess
spatial patchiness of zooplankton using continuous ADCP mapping and MOCNESS
tow-yos and assess horizontal gradients of dissolved oxygen with
CTD-O2-fluorescence sections along the entire length of the Inlet.
CTD-rosette casts will assess phytoplankton and bacterial pigments. An
autonomous profiling vehicle and GPS drifter will be used to map vertical
current shear and horizontal velocities. Ancillary experiments will done
with live zooplankton.

Mark Ohman with Jules Jaffe

Extra note for Captain Zimm:
We will rotate some of the science party using the whaler to pick up at the
IOS dock. A visiting scientist from IOS (Dario Stucchi) is expected aboard
for 1 day.

Summer Work on Sproul
Simenstad & Ohman Jaffe

Present: Capt. Althouse, Capt. Zimm, J. Jaffe, M. Ohman, A. DeRobertis ,
M. Latz, R. Wilson, L. Butler, Rose Dufour, Woody Sutherland
Topic: Loading/unloading and logistics for the Summer Sproul Cruises

Simenstad will have 3 vans loaded when Sproul leaves San Diego. The
Ohman/Jaffe van, (and mooring equipment),and
MOCNESS equipment will be trucked up to Astoria for loading.

Simenstad plans to arrive 19 July, and be off by 0800 on 20 July. The 20th
will be dedicated
to loading the Ohman-Jaffe equipment. The ship has agreed to depart after
loading. This will have Sproul arriving in (IOS Patricia Bay) to embark the
reminder of personnel by 0800 on 22 July. The transit time from Astoria to
the (Strait of Juan de Fuca) is 19 hours. ( The transit time to IOS is 28-32
hours.) The IOS docks will be used again. Departure am
22 July. M. Ohman will initiate the contact for use of these facilities.

Small scientific party will ride ship from Astoria to Sydney (IOS)
A small avon is needed to run personnel back from IOS. The Ohman Jaffe
cruise will be two legs. The last 48 hours will be dedicated to Jaffe and
Franks. Ohman and some scientific personnel will depart the ship on 2
August.
Science plan:

22 July CTD section
23 July mooring deployment

Discussion followed on mooring deployment. Four people will be available
to deploy mooring. Lynn Butler, Fred Uhlman, Jim Potts, and possibly a
Sproul mate.

Commercial divers should be hired in case of fouled lines (King brothers).

If an ADCP is needed, it will need to be installed (at IOS) and removed
at (IOS). Divers should be prepared for this evolution. STS provides
computer for the ADCP.
Capt. Zimm suggested that more weight (chain) be (used) this time for
mooring deployment. (2 shots.) (Chain was on board but not used last summer).

Mooring will be pulled up (pm) on 4th. It was agreed that Sproul would
return to port (IOS) by 1800. Sproul will depart after
scientific party disembarks. [Extra people need to be available to do the
job]
(Canadian) Customs will take about (2) hours. We will (most likely clear
U.S.) customs in San Diego.
Sproul should be in San Diego the evening of 10th or am on 11th. The ship
will be off loading in San Diego. Latz will depart late (morning) on 11th,
to return on am of 12th.
