In terms of community acclaim the Robert Paine Scripps Forum for Science, Society, and the Environment (Scripps Seaside Forum) is coming up roses…or orchids rather.

The multifunctional and beautiful new oceanfront venue won an "orchid" for its architecture from the San Diego Architectural Foundation at the 2009 Orchids & Onions Awards Ceremony held Nov. 12.

According to the Orchids & Onions website, the Scripps Seaside Forum was lauded for its tasteful blend of academic and business function with a laid-back Southern California twist that celebrates San Diego’s coastal environment.

"Located virtually on the beach just south of the pier at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, this state-of-the-art teaching and conference center is an unimposing and relaxed retreat where the brightest minds can gather to tackle our planet’s greatest scientific challenges. This privately funded and LEED certified project is an admirable addition to the Scripps campus." (orchidsandonions.org)

Designed by architects Safdie Rabines to reflect Scripps’ eco-conscious mission, the Scripps Seaside Forum was awarded LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council in August 2009. It is the first building on the UC San Diego campus to receive this “green” accreditation.

“It's great to see this project receive recognition from the San Diego Architectural Foundation after the more than 12 years of work that went into making it a reality,” said Lawrance Bailey, Scripps Senior Director of Development, who attended the award ceremony for Scripps. “It was very challenging to get the funds needed to finish it, but all the hard work has been worth it. The response from everyone who has given to the project has been very gratifying.”
